Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Waseem Akhtar has been booked for allegedly inciting people against intelligence agencies and using foul language against them.
Akhtar has been booked under sections 123-A (Condemnation of the creation of the State and advocate of abolition of its sovereignty), 124-A (Sedition) of the Pakistan Penal Code and Telegraph Act, and section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. These cases were reportedly filed by residents of SITE Super Highway Industrial Area and Sohrab Goth.
Earlier, a sedition case was lodged against another MQM leader, London-based Muhammad Anwar, on the complaint of a local resident who cited media reports as the sole evidence in his plea.
Although police authorities did not come up with any immediate plans against Anwar, the MQM termed the case continuation of a “state-backed campaign against the party”.
“An FIR has been registered against Muhammad Anwar at the Gulbahar police station on a complaint of Imran Bikik,” said DIG-West Feroze Shah. “The main crux of the sections in the FIR alleges that he conspired against the country and its sovereignty,” the official said of the case.
