Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) leader Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqui was acquitted by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in a hate speech case on Saturday.
ATC judge Bushra Zaman conducted the hearing of the case lodged in November 2014 with the Saddar Police Station.
The court, after listening to the two sides, in its verdict said the prosecution had failed to substantiate charges.
Two other accused in the case have already been absolved.
Talking to media after his acquittal, Farooqui said, “I have confidence in the courts and I am hopeful I will be absolved in other cases as well.”
“There are threats to my life while being taken to courts from Adyala Prison, Rawalpindi, or coming from there,” said the ASWJ leader, adding “If something happens to me, then Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be held responsible for it.”
