White Lies

Agha Ghazanfar, the much feted principal of Aitchison College, who was brought in by the Board of Governors, has been shown his way out. Apparently, that whole stickler-for-merit thing that made him look good on paper, didn’t make him so endearing in real life, specially for some members of the Board itself, who wanted their own kids and grandkids in the college out of merit.

It turns out that they couldn’t exactly throw him out, given his particular contract. Well, a truce of sorts has been reached: he can stay in the designated principal’s house at the college but he can’t go to the office and be principal.

It remains to be seen whether he would be content with this arrangement or whether he would set up a Tibetan-government-in-exile at Dharamsala and say the principal’s residence is the real Aitchison College now. Stranger things have happened!

The prime minister has certainly returned to reversed fortunes after his trip abroad. When he left, the judicial commission had decided in his government’s favour. By the time he came back, different elections tribunals had given verdicts against two key party members.

The mood was sombre at the first high-level government meeting after his return. Someone tried to break the ice by quipping whether the mood was off because of the recent initiatives against the PPP or by the decisions in favour of the PTI. Captain obvious.
