A majority of leading and distinguished lawyers and constitutional experts on Sunday said that landmark verdict of the Supreme Court (SC) was a historic decision in the country.
Leading constitutional expert and senior Advocate Hafiz Tariq Nasim chairing a panel discussion on Sunday said that the “SC’s judgment is 100 percent accurate as it will steer the country out of perpetual chaos”.
He said the Parliament was a supreme legitimate body and vital organ of the state which was fully empowered for necessary amendment in the constitution and enactment in law as deemed fit in the prevailing scenario.
Mian Jaffer Hussain, another distinguished expert and leading lawyer, while commenting said, “No one can clip the powers of the Parliament and decision of the Apex Court is absolutely strictly in accordance with the Constitution of Pakistan and within the ambit of law”.
Other senior lawyers Mahmood Qazi, Asif Nazir Awan, Zamirul Hassan, Nasir Mahmood, Aftab Alam Joya, Junaid Jabbar, Amin Javed Chaudhry and Jalilur Rehman said that the Parliament is fully empowered for amendment in the Constitution and enactment in law as enshrined in the articles of the Constitution.
“Last amendment in the constitution for the establishment of temporary military courts in the country is the need of the hour and it was adopted unanimously,” they added.
They were of the view that the constitutional amendment in the National Assembly and Senate was adopted in the larger national interest and all top leaders of the mainstream political parties were taken into confidence prior to its tabling in the house. They are of the opinion that now the question of opposing it does not arise at all.
The lawyers called upon the political parties and opposition to play their vital role to ensure the rule of law, supremacy of the constitution and parliament which they added was panacea of all evils in the society.
