  • Doctors say unhygienic, spicy food at restaurants result in gastro-related disease, advise citizens to eat less during first three days of Eid

Completely ignoring harmful affect on their health, most people celebrate Eid as day of deliverance and fill their tummies beyond its capacity resulting in digestive system disorders.

After fasting for as many as thirty days in Ramzan, they celebrate the festival of Eid by arranging different parties completely neglecting the precautionary health measures. Consequently, the day of festivity actually turns out to be a painful day for most.

Dr Umair, who performs his duties at the Mayo Hospital’s Gastro Ward, told Pakistan Today that doctors are over burdened on the eve of Eidul Fitar as a huge number of people complaining of gastro diseases throng the hospitals.

“Almost all the eateries have partially cooked and frozen meat on the display to save their time as there is too much rush in the restaurants on such festivals,” he added.

According to Dr Umair, the semi-cooked meat is the root cause of gastro related diseases especially on Eids. He further cautioned the patients who are already taking medicine for pain in joints as these medicines increase the acidity and when they eat oily items the acidity level further rises.

“The increase in acidity is catastrophic in some cases as it further complicates the issue and sometimes resulting in blood vomits,” he added.

While talking to Pakistan Today, Dr Amjad Shehzad, Medical Superintendent (MS) of Mayo Hospital, said that the stomach is used to digest food in lesser amount after fasting for thirty days.

“Everyone must try to eat light and healthy diet at least for three days after Ramzan and must refrain from eating spicy food during first three days of Eid,” said Dr Shehzad.

He further went on to say that the patients who have diabetes must avoid eating food from restaurants because they are less immunised of viral diseases.

“The chances of heart attacks further increase for the patients of blood pressure when they eat spicy food,” he warned.

Dr Shehzad suggested that people should eat in less quantity but more than three times in a day during Eid days.

Dr Arif Siddiqui, in a conversation with this scribe, said that people should show patience during Eid days as they did during the month of the Ramzan.

He said that a number of cases are witnessed on Eid days in which patients complain of severe pain in abdomen. He said that the sub-standard eatables available in the market create this dreadful scenario during Eid days.

According to Dr Abdul Basit of Akhtar Saeed Medical College and Hospital, hundreds of patients complain of stomach pain during Eid days and almost every case is of food poisoning.

“Most of the people eat carelessly after Ramazan and fall victim to Diarrhoea and food poisoning,” he added.

Dr Basit suggested that in case of emergency situation when doctor is also not available, one must use the Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) to fill up the quantity of wasted salts from the body.
