Punjab Minister for Home Col (r) Shuja Khanzada has directed vice chancellors of all universities of the province to ensure strict monitoring of hostels and take action against those elements that pose as students and are staying at the hostels. He said that screening of the persons visiting hostels frequently for meeting students should also be done.
He was presiding over a meeting of vice chancellors of all universities of Punjab in Darbar Hall at the Civil Secretariat on Tuesday.
Secretary Home, inspector general of police (IGP), secretary Higher Education besides senior officers of Counter-Terrorism Force (CTF) and other officials concerned were present in the meeting.
The minister directed that only such professors should be called to deliver lectures to students whose reputation is uncontroversial and have no link with any banned organisation.
He stressed upon university authorities to invite guests only after security clearance and immediately contact the CTF in case of any suspicious activity.
Khanzada directed that the mosques in the premises of universities should be closely monitored and no one should be allowed to stay in the mosques overnight. He said that if any faculty member belongs to a party which has extremist views or a banned organisation, he should be immediately pointed out and Counter-Terrorism Department should be informed about any suspicious activity or unusual situation at toll free number 0800-11111.
“The duty officers will be available round the clock at the toll free number and the name of the person giving information will be kept secret,” he added.
He further said that regional heads of the CTF will soon contact vice chancellors and should be extended all out cooperation.
The home minister further said that reports have been received that some miscreants in the garb of tableegh want to use students of engineering and medical colleges for the achievement of their nefarious designs and their attempts should be foiled. He said that war against terrorism is a national cause, adding that the government is implementing zero tolerance policy against terrorism and extremism.
