Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Mumtaz Tarrar trounced Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s Tariq Tarrar in the NA-108 by-election in Mandi Bahauddin by bagging at least 75, 513 votes from 265 polling stations, according to unofficial results.

According to unofficial preliminary results, PTI’s Tariq Tarrar was able to secure 38, 767 votes from the 265 polling stations.

Polling in NA-108 witnessed clashes between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) workers near some polling stations, resulting in injuries to more than a dozen people.

Polling was temporarily suspended at polling station No 138 owing to the tense situation following which a large police contingent was deployed at the polling station. However, the policemen were unable to restore order due to a large number of charged activists present at the scene.

Polling restarted following the deployment of Rangers.

As many as 15 persons were injured when supporters of rival candidates exchanged fire at polling station No 80, which had been declared sensitive. The workers of rival candidates exchanged hot words over some polling matters and then started indiscriminate firing at each other, police sources said.

Adil Hussain, Saber Hussain and Zafar Iqbal were later shifted to Civil Hospital, where they were in critical condition. Heavy contingents of Rangers and police rushed the polling station and brought the situation under control.

In the constituency, 112 polling stations had been labelled ‘sensitive’, while 62 were called ‘most sensitive’.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf found itself embroiled in controversy once again during by-elections in Mandi Bahauddin.

As elections commenced at 8am, PTI candidate Tariq Tarrar learnt that his polling agents were allegedly barred from sitting inside the Degree College Polling Station. The irked candidate is said to have hurled abusive remarks polling authorities as a result.

“I will burn everything down if my polling agents are not allowed to sit here,” Tarrar stated. The Election Commission of Pakistan has taken notice of the incident and demanded a report from DRO Mandi Bahauddin.

The presiding officer told Pakistan Today that the PTI candidate’ agents had failed to arrive on time, delaying the polling process.
