The prices of chicken have registered a sharp increase during the last week in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

According to survey conducted by this scribe, the prices of this essential commodity have been increased to Rs 200, which is not an affordable price for the common man.

A couple of weeks ago, chicken was priced at around Rs 160/kg, however, without any reason or justification the prices have shot up.

Most of the people use chicken due to its affordable prices and to maintaining good health as it contains sufficient proteins but now they have to go for an alternative energy intake source.

Imran Ahmad, an employee of a private office said that the demand has increased due to the current wedding season, subsequent to which the prices shot up.

A student Waqas Majeed said that despite a balanced federal budget announced by the government, the chicken prices have been increased.

The concerned authorities should chalk out a mechanism to check prices of kitchen items especially chicken and eggs which are essential for a sound health, Sadia Sajjad, a house wife, suggested.

When contacted, a representative of the Poultry Association held that costly feed and the rise in petroleum prices was responsible for the increase in prices of the poultry products.

He claimed that the transporters have increased transportation charges after a slight increase in the petroleum prices.
