Local residents of Landhi area mounted nightlong protest at a police station against the arrest of a youth who was captured by police on alleged charge of robbery. Police resorted to aerial firing to break up the infuriated demonstrators in Friday’s wee hours.

The family members of Fayyaz, who was detained at Landhi police station under a robbery charge, laid siege to the police station demanding his release. The protesters said Fayyaz was abducted from his locality; hence, an FIR should be lodged against the SHO Landhi police station.

SSP Korangi ordered to suspend Station House Officer (SHO) Landhi Saadat Butt and file a case of kidnapping against him. Afterwards, an abduction FIR was lodged against the SHO with Fayyaz’s father, Muhammed Qasim as complainant. The demonstrators demanded to file a case against SSP Korangi who is overseeing the issue.

However, when the protesters forced into the premises of police station, they found Fayyaz’s shirt in the lockup. On this, the protesters flew in rage saying, “Fayyaz was kept here. However, he was rushed to some other location.” On the occasion, they demanded police high-ups to recover him at the earliest.

When contacted, police sources said the case had been registered now and an attempt will be made to recover the accused at the earliest.

The protesters were on rampage when a special police force arrived on the occasion for a raid in the area. The distraught demonstrators moved towards the policemen in plain clothes who opened aerial firing. The personnel of the concerned police station also joined in the firing.

Finding the situation advancing towards an apparent flashpoint, Rangers personnel were called in and nearly two dozen demonstrators were rounded up and threw them at lockup of Landhi police station.

Demonstrators once again rallied round the police station and staged a sit-in demanding the release of all the detainees.
