The Muttahida Qaumi Movement’ (MQM) Coordination Committee called off their mourning on Thursday noon and appealed to traders and transporters to open their business.

It thanked businessmen and transporters to show solidarity with it on the custodial death of their party member Waseem at Aziz Bhatti Police Station.

The coordination committee thanked Karachiites for showing unity and standing shoulder to shoulder with them. It said people were allowed to open their businesses and transport freely after mid-day of Thursday. However, market and public transports in Karachi remained closed on Thursday morning.

Consequently, some of universities suspended the scheduled examination papers including the University of Karachi (KU), the Federal University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) and NED University of Engineering and Technology.

On the other hand, a large number of people could not reach their workplaces due to unavailability of public transport.

However, all the areas of Karachi where Sindhi, Pashtu, Balochi, Siraeki and Punjabi speaking people live in majority remained opened as usual in Malir, Pipri, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Landhi, Sachal Goth, Shanti Nagar, Banaras, Ittehad Town, Suhrab Goth, Keamari, Ibrahim Haideri, Liyari and Mauripur as the mega city Karachi has already been divided on sharp ethno-political lines.
