Govt signs deal for setting up desalination plant in sea

  • Memon says establishment of desalination plant will provide potable water to Karachiites

Sindh Minister for Information and Local Government Sharjeel Inam Memon said that an agreement has been signed with foreign companies for setting up a desalination plant in sea to provide sweet and mineral water to citizen of Karachi.

He also announced that 40MGD water from this plant will be supplied to Karachi from Ramzan while more that 20MGD water would be provide within three month from same system.

Addressing press conference on Monday at his office, the minister said that this system working successfully in most of the countries. He said government would sign MOU with the foreign companies in next month for supply 80MGD from desalination plant while ground-breaking ceremony of K-4 project would be held on 10 June and chief minister Sindh will lay foundation stone of the project.

He said the DHA residents purchasing 3000 gallon water in Rs.3000 but the desalination water would be available in Rs1500 and people would get sweet and mineral water. He said same rental desalination plant would be setup in next few months.

The minister said that some elements are playing politics on water issue but government decided to reply them through working and to provide water to the people. Sharjeel said that government also decided to complete all the incomplete water supply schemes in this years and more than 800milion rupees would be allocated in upcoming budget for this purpose.

He said Sindh government is ready to hold local body’s election on 20 September and conveyed the election commission about this decision. He said PPP believed in democracy and arrangement for the local body’s election almost completed in Sindh.
