Director General Rangers Maj Gen Bilal Akbar has expressed determination of controlling terrorism in Karachi while stating that foreign powers are behind the subversive activities in the metropolis.

While briefing the standing committee of the Senate on human rights chaired by Senator Nasrin Jalil at Sindh Secretariat on Thursday, he said foreign powers were involved behind the terrorism in Karachi and the proofs had been handed over to the federal government.

He briefed that law enforcement agencies were conducting successful intelligence based operations in Karachi. He said around 70 per cent of the crimes in the city erupt out of personal disputes and clashes. He said the law enforcement agency was working hard to counter the crime rate. The DG said a criminal involved in Safoora carnage was arrested earlier but was freed by the court. The department was probing the matter how he got bail, he added.

Akbar said at least 15 per cent crimes were sectarian cases while 13 per cent were street crimes. Sindh Police Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Haider Jamali said as many as four terrorists behind Safoora bus shooting incident had been arrested. However, the police were carrying out raids to catch the other 10 culprits, he added. The Sindh IG also briefed the committee and said that law and order situation of the province had improved with joint efforts of police and Rangers. The IG said the Sindh police could take pride in the fact that ransom kidnapping cases had been eliminated from the city.
