Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Thursday said that security threats in Pakistan are complex, multidimensional and hybrid in character, rendering traditional response mechanisms irrelevant.

Addressing army officers at the Command and Staff College Quetta, Gen Sharif emphasised the complex and ever-changing nature of threats to national security.

“Wars are not fought by the army alone,” he said, adding that the whole nation’s efforts are necessary in order to be successful. Gen Sharif said that only a secure Pakistan can be a prosperous Pakistan, and that the country’s efforts in the fight against terrorism and extremism would impact future generations.

The COAS said that Operation Zarb-e-Azb is a strike against terrorism in urban centres.
