Hunt for VCs in final stages

The Vice-Chancellors (VCs) Search Committee has shortlisted 23 candidates out of 180 applicants against the coveted post of vice chancellor at 10 public sector universities of the province, Pakistan Today has learnt.

The shortlisted candidates were once again interviewed by the committee on Wednesday.

The committee includes Syed Babar Ali as Convener and comprises of Zafar Iqbal Quraishi, Punjab Assembly Member (MPA) Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha, Punjab Higher Education Commission Chairperson Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin and Higher Education Department (HED) secretary.

“Of the sitting VCs, three were shortlisted for the slots again. Government College University (GCU) VC Professor Khaleequr Rehman, Fatima Jinnah Women University VC Dr Samina Amin, Government College Women University Sialkot VC Dr Farhat Saleemi have been shortlisted once again and interviewed by the committee.,” an official in HED revealed to the scribe.

The official added that Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) VC Dr Sabiha Mansoor has not been short listed.

Of the 10 universities, three are women universities including Lahore College for Women University, Government College for Women University Sialkot and Fatima Jinnah Women University.

“Convener Syed Babar Ali has to go abroad due to some personal engagements so the selection work is being completed quickly,” the official maintained, adding that the committee is set to finalise the candidates by May 15.

The tenure of the six VCs will expire on July 13, 2015, including Dr Sabiha Mansoor, VC of Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) and Dr Samina Amin Qadir, VC of Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU), Rawalpindi.

The tenure of three VCs, including Dr Khaleequr Rahman of Government College University (GCU), Dr Faizul Hassan of University of Education Lahore and Dr Syed Khawaja Alqama of Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), Multan will expire on July 22, 2015 while that of Dr Mohammad Akram Chaudhry of University of Sargodha (UoS) on October 9, 2015.

The four new universities for which VCs are being finalised include The Ghazi University of Dera Ghazi Khan, Government Sadiq College Women University of Bahawalpur, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering and Technology, Multan, and Khawaja Fareed University of Engineering and Technology, Rahim Yar Khan.

Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha, a member of the interview committee refused to comment on the issue, when the scribe contacted her.
