The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has released an amount of Rs 500 million to 25 universities and 12 colleges to reimburse the fee of around 16,000 students, under its Prime Minister Fee Reimbursement Scheme for less developed areas.
The payment is being made to the students of last financial year along with the newly enrolled students of Fall-2014 and Spring-2015, an official of HEC said.
The grant of 1.50 billion has been released to HEC under this scheme for financial Year-2014-15 and the process of releasing amount to the respective universities students is going on, the official said.
The scheme was approved in the year 2012 by the Cabinet Division for the Financial Year 2012-13 for MA, MS, MPhil, and PhD students and the areas were covered were Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and FATA.
The current scheme was announced in the budget speech for Financial Year 2013-14 by the finance minister, expanding the scope of the scheme to interior Sindh and Southern Punjab.
The areas included by the prime minister were AJK, Malakand, Kohistan, DI Khan Divisions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Attock, Mianwali, Khushab and Bhakkar districts of Punjab.
