An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) of Lahore on Friday granted eight-day physical remand of Mustafa Kanju and four other accused to police in Zain murder case.
Mustafa Kanju, a son of former state minister for foreign affairs Siddique Kanju, had allegedly opened fire on a vehicle near Cavalry Ground, which led to the murder of a teenager Zain, while a pedestrian was injured in the incident.
Kanju and his security guards were presented in an ATC Friday under extremely tight security and unauthorised individuals and lawyers with no connection to the case were prevented from entering court premises.
The police had sought 14-day remand of the accused from the court but the judge granted eight-day physical remand. The court later adjourned the case till April 11.
During the hearing, Kanju argued that the fact that he fired shots did not mean they led to Zain’s death. He claimed he was innocent and that the police and the victim’s relatives were conspiring to trap him in the case.
The lawyer of the accused stated that Zain had fallen victim to cross-firing between Mustafa and his unidentified ‘opponents’ and that Kanju had no personal enmity with Zain.
The ATC handed over Mustafa Kanju, Saadullah, Sadiq Amin, Ikramullah and Muhammad Asif to the police for the remand. Earlier, Kanju had presented himself in the office of SSP Investigation for arrest.
