The Lahore High Court (LHC) Wednesday disposed of a petition seeking direction to regulate tuition fees of private schools after the assurance that the draft bill for the purpose would be tabled soon in the Punjab Assembly.
The single bench comprising Justice Shahid Jamil Khan was hearing the petition filed by Muhammad Naeem.
Earlier, the petitioner’s counsel Shiraz Zaka assailing section 12 of Punjab Private Institutions Regulations Act 1984 submitted that most private schools increased tuition fees every year in the absence of an effective mechanism to regulate the fee structure.
He said that the step was against constitutional provisions which guarantee compulsory primary education for all citizens. He asked the court to issue guidelines to regulate increase in fees.
However, a provincial law officer on behalf of Punjab secretary education submitted a reply and said that the draft bill for regulating private school fees was being prepared. He submitted that the draft bill will be tabled in next session of the Punjab Assembly.
