The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has challenged in the Supreme Court the government’s decision of holding local bodies elections in cantonment areas on non-party basis.

Former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf filed the petition in the apex court.

In its plea the PPP stated that it is necessary for all the political parties to take part in the electoral process as all parties are eligible to contest federal, provincial and local government elections.

There are no no-go areas in Cantt, the PPP petition said.

The party said it is against the spirit of basic rights and election laws to keep political parties away from the local bodies elections in cantonment areas.

The petitioner requested the court to declare the Section 61 of Cantonment Ordinance 2002 unconstitutional as it conflicts with the Constitution of Pakistan.
