It’s been 20 years since Will Smith starred in blockbuster Independence Day.
But on Thursday Australian actor Liam Hemsworth revealed on Instagram that he will be joining the cast for the highly anticipated sequel.
The new film, which grossed over $800 million after its initial release in 1996, is due to be out in 2016 and will also include actress Jessie Usher, who will play Will’s son.
‘Signed in for the new #IndependenceDaysequel movie today,’ the 25-year-old captioned a shot of himself with producer Harold Kloser.
Director Roland Emmerich also revealed the news on his Twitter page on Wednesday, writing:
‘Excited to officially announce Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum as the next two pieces of the Independence day Sequel.’
Last month Liam was seen still sporting a wrist brace after he reportedly broke his lower arm late last month.
The screen star was first seen wearing a cast on January 31 when he rocked up at the G’Day USA Gala in Los Angeles, and was most recently spotted with the bone support earlier this week.
Landing Independence Day is another great coup for the rising Hollywood star, following big parts in the likes of The Hunger Games, where he played Gale Hawthorne.
Liam, who was once engaged to popstar Miley Cyrus, is also awaiting the release of the next film in The Hunger Games franchise, Mockingjay – Part 2, which hits US theatres November 20.
Mockingjay – Part 1, which had a budget of $125 million, debuted on November 21 last year in the US, and became the fifth highest grossing film of 2014.
The film raked in a worldwide total of $751.7 million, including $336.7 million in domestic earnings and $415 million in overseas revenue.
