Police continues to search for the two inmates who fled Gilgit’s district jail on Friday and later managed to escape from a police check post, BBC Urdu reports.

The escapees, which includes an inmate convicted in Nanga Parbat Massacre of 10 foreign climbers and a Pakistani tour guide, fled from a police barrier in Minaawar area after a crossfire with the police officials.

A local Station House Officer (SHO) was injured in the exchange of fire.

SHO Jutial Abdul Hadi, while speaking to BBC Urdu, said that the police continues to search for the fleeing inmates and upon a tip-off received Saturday night, the team reached Dinapur; a town on the outskirts of the city.

A search operation in the area led to a crossfire with the hiding escapees taking advantage of the dark and fleeing.

An SHO was shot in the arm during the exchange of fire, he said.

Entry and exit points to and from Gilgit and outskirts remained closed for two days and now are being monitored.

Four inmates attempted to break free from Gilgit’s district jail in the early hours of Friday. One of the inmate was shot dead by the prison guards while another was caught injured. Two of the inmates managed to escape.

Authorities had suspended the jail warden and arrested at least 13 people, including prison staff, over suspicion of aiding the inmates in the prison break.

A reward of Rs2 million has been announced for helping to recapture the Nanga Parbat massacre convict Habibur Rehman.

On June 22, 2013, gunmen killed 10 foreign climbers and a local guide at the base camp of Nanga Parbat, one of the world’s highest mountains, in the scenic Himalayan valley of Bunar Das in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Banned terrorist groups Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Jundullah had claimed the attack separately.
