The Pakistan People’s Party on Monday announced names of candidates who will contest the upcoming Senate elections to be held on March 3.

Speaking at a press conference, former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf announced names of candidates who are set to take part in the Senate elections. Former law minister Farooq H. Naek will contest for the technocrat seat while Sassui Palejo will contest for the women’s seat.

Former interior Minister Rehman Malik, Islamuddin Shaikh, Saleem Mandiviwala, Engineer Giyan Chand (who is a Dalit), and Abdul Latif Ansari were nominated to contest elections from the general seats from Sindh. Nadeem Afzal Chand will be the only candidate contesting the Upper House election on the general seat from Punjab. From Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Khanzada Khan and Noor Alam of the PPP will contest the elections, where a technocrat seat has been allotted to Humayun Khan. Nargis Faiz Malik has been nominated for general seat in Islamabad. PPP leaders did not announce any candidate from Balochistan

Ashraf hoped that PPP will again emerge as a leading party in the Upper House elections. According to sources, an understanding has been reached among PPP, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) in Sindh. PPP has principally decided to take seven seats in the province giving three seats to MQM and one seat to PML-F. These candidates of the parties are likely to be elected unopposed without holding the election in the province.
