Good news from Kabul

Cultivating friendship

After years of distrust there are two indications of improvement of relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan. One, the arrival of Afghan National Army cadets for training at Kakul Military Academy. Two, the Afghan army has conducted an operation against terrorists near the Pak-Afghan border, killing 18 and injuring many more.

Under Karzai, hundreds of Afghan cadets got their training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun. This was considered the largest training programme at the Academy for foreign cadets. Repeated offers of training Afghan cadets in Pakistan were turned down by Karzai. President Ashraf Ghani has made a tentative move by sending a small batch of six cadets to Kakul. With the restoration of confidence there is a likelihood of more Afghan cadetscoming to Pakistan. Pakistan is also currently hosting a five-member Afghan military delegation led by Afghan National Army Director General of Training, Education and Doctrine. The delegation is on a six-day visit. This too is an indication of a nascent change in Kabul’s policy towards Islamabad. An improvement in military to military relations is of vital need at a time when both counties are trying hard to get rid of terrorism. The operation in Nangarhar comes after a similar action in Afghanistan’s Kunar province, considered a rear base for Pakistani Taliban. It is hoped that closer relations been the armies would lead to the elimination of some of Pakistan’s most wanted terrorists reported to be in Afghanistan.

The news about US ambassador to India describing India as a key American partner in Afghanistan should not cause concern. India has given Afghanistan millions of dollars in aid and has financed several development projects besides providing scholarship to hundreds of Afghan students. The type of support can only be matched by China which has also invested heavily in Afghanistan. Indian influence would thus be neuteralised. Of crucial importance for Pakistan is to treat Afghanistan as an equal sovereign country. Friendship has to be cultivated rather than demanded.

  1. why always bring India in any news, and then pull China to do the batting for Pakistan. Pakistan needs to improve relation with India first else looking everything with suspicion and India hand will continue . Improve relationship with India first
