LAHORE-
Governor Punjab Chaudhary Muhammad Sarwar resigned from his post on Thursday amid reports of a possible dismissal following his criticism of the federal government, private media reported.
The governor had sent the resignation to the President House on Wednesday evening, reports added.
Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana Iqbal has taken over as acting governor Punjab.
Addressing a press conference, Sarwar denied reports saying that he was asked to resign or was asked to explain his statements critical of the government. He further said that his resignation had nothing to do with hte Sharif brothers.
He said that he could serve Pakistan better away from the governor house, adding that he wants to help the country where all of the masses have an equual chance to progress.
He further added that he can help the masses more effectively away from the governor house, explaining that the decision to resign had nothing to do with the Sharif brothers.
“I have no objection to Obama’s India visit but he should have treated Pakistan equally and visited to express solidarity,” he said in clarification of his earlier statement regarding the US president visiting India but not Pakistan.
The governor had termed US President Barack Obama’s visit to India and ignoring Pakistan a failure of the country at the diplomatic front.
“It’s the diplomatic failure of Pakistan that US President Obama visited India and signed all-important civil nuclear deal with it that included some condition even against American and international laws,” Sarwar said at the Tehreek Istehkam-e-Pakistan ceremony on Tuesday.
The governor was also critical of the civil bureaucracy, saying they enjoyed each and every perk and privilege in the country but had contributed nothing to the nation in the last 68 years.
He said that the only option left to teach the bureaucracy to perform their duties was the use of “baton”.
Mr. Sarwar is a former Member of the British Parliament who had been elected from Glasgow on a labor party ticket.
He gave up his British citizenship in order to become the Governor of Pakistan’s largest province.
The writing on the wall was there all the time!, Mr.Sarwar as Governor was enjoying the trappings of power without able to execute it. Though he was aware of his symbolic role he thought he could influence the politics to no avail. The dicussion about Pres.Obama 's visit is irrelevant. Mr.Sarwar was repeatedly snubbed one way or the other.
Now we have to see what the real Mr.Sarwar can do? He is" damaged goods". Which political party is he going to join?As far as the Shariff family is concerned every body serves the "master"and not the country. THe national security advisor is 85 years old and we have no foreign minister. We don't need them because we have a reactive foreign policy rather than a proactive one. Every minister is a expert on it.
May i ask what will Mr. Sarwar be remembered for? I suspect conspiracy theories will flourish.
Every politician is what you call damaged goods MR.M M Khan, yet we find the nation over look all the damage they have caused and continue to elect them. They are all masters. The problem is,if we continue to elect these major parties,we will continue to get the same results, but the bigger problem is,who do you vote for? I believe this younger generation needs to step up,there are over 180 MILLION people in Pakistan, there has got to be a leader among them(I hope and pray) Until we change the culture and our way of thinking, nothing will ever change.
I thank you for your comment. When a nation of over 180 million people continues to elect Bhuttos (four times) and the Shariff's (three times) what does it speak of their IQ. They have a fatal attraction for them. That is the only way to describe it. No offence ment. I can cite a recent example of Siri Lanka. The Govt.was run by a family syndicate. The public saw through it and kicked the family out en mass. This is called democracy. Can you imagine this happening in Pakistan?
A fair and honest person misfit in the bad politics of Pakistan. What a waste of an honest person Ch Sarwar. Hero of Scotland is zero in the politics of Pakistan. I wish Ch Sarwar join PTI. At least Imran Khan is much better than others. hahaha dirty pakis politics
