  • KP Police hires expertise from Punjab Information Technology Board to revamp policing in province

The overhaul and makeover of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police has been one of the most touted feathers in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s cap. Party chief Imran Khan has gone on record repeatedly to denounce Punjab police, while flaunting the prowess of the security forces in KP.

In an ironic twist, it seems as though the entire revamping of the KP police was done with the help of the Punjab police. While Khan has been criticising the Punjab government and the provincial police department over various issues, the KP government has been hiring the services and expertise of the same to improve policing.

According to documents shared with Pakistan Today, the KP police department hired expertise from the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) to revamp policing in the province. As per details, the application for geo-tagging has been developed and handed over to the KP Police Department by PITB experts.

“The help of technology in policing will revolutionize the crime control in KP in the coming years and currently people are being trained in using the technology,” a senior government official, on the condition of anonymity, told Pakistan Today.

The documents further revealed that KP IG Police Nasir Khan Durrani has sent a letter of appreciation to the PITB along with a token amount of Rs 100,000.

The letter lauds the “supportive and professional” attitude of the Punjab IT experts during the “development, updating and modification” of the geo-tagging application, which proved immensely “useful” for the KP Police Department.

Sources further reveal that the entire application has been developed for the KP police to monitor crime, compile data, and use it to effectively control crime.

“We are always amazed when Imran Khan criticises the Punjab government for lagging behind KP. When he boasts of revamping the KP Police Department he probably does not realise that the technical expertise has come from the Punjab government,” a source within the Punjab government added.

PTI Information Secretary Shireen Mazari and KP Information Minister Mushtaq Ghani were not available for comments.
