Chairing a meeting at the Supreme Court’s Karachi registry, an apex court judge Anwar Zaheer Jamali, who is a monitoring judge of the anti-terrorism courts in Sindh, expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of ATCs in view of emerging situation in the aftermath of an attack on a school in Peshawar.
The sources told PPI that Justice Jamali directed the ATCs’ judges to expeditiously decide the cases without any fear. They said the judge directed the home secretary and AIG police to provide adequate security to the ATCs’ judges, prosecutors and witnesses. They were further directed to ensure presence of IOs and witnesses in the court during the trial.
The SC judge convened a meeting to discuss the performance of the ATCs in the present situation. The meeting was attended by the Sindh High Court judges who were looking after the ATCs and all ATCs judges.
The home secretary, finance secretary and additional inspector general of police also attended the meeting.
Missing person case: SHC seeks explanation from police
The Sindh High Court (SHC) has sought explanation from a top police official over his subordinates’ failure to locate a missing person who was kidnapped in August 2011.
A division bench of SHC was seized with the hearing of a petition filed by Aslam Khan Ghori, who moved the court seeking recovery of his son, Irfan Khan Ghori.
The petitioner had submitted that his son was kidnapped from Pak Colony on August 17, 2011, and despite the payment of a ransom mount, he was not released by the captors. He said the law enforcement officials had been clueless on his whereabouts after lapse of more than three years time.
Anti-Violent Crime Cell’s Inspector, Amjad Kalyar, who is investigating the kidnapping for ransom case, filed a progress report in the court submitting that some accused involved in the kidnapping of petitioner’s son had been rounded up and after hours of interrogation they had made some confessions.
They admitted that they kidnapped and killed Ghouri. However, they did not disclose where his dead body was dumped. While taking on record the report, the judges observed the record revealed that since 2011 the matter was being adjourned from time to time on the pretext of false undertakings by the police officials. However, till date no positive progress regarding the fate of detainee seems to have made.
The court directed the AVCC’s head explain the failure of his subordinates to locate missing person. The hearing was adjourned till January 30.
