Religious leader and lawyer killed, terror bid foiled

An official of Ahle-Sunnat-Wal-Jamaat (ASWJ) was killed on Saturday in Market No 24 in a firing incident in Karachi’s BaldiaTown area.

According to a spokesperson of the ASWJ, the victim’s name was Abdul Hakeem Arif Siddiq. Reports said armed assailants on a motorbike fired upon Abdul Hakeem leaving him critically wounded. He was immediately taken to hospital but he succumbed to his wounds.

In another incident, a lawyer, Malik Tanveer, was shot dead by unidentified motorcyclists when he was riding car along with his wife near 23rd Street in DHA Phase 1. The body was shifted to JMPC for medico-legal formality. However, the accused managed to flee from spot.

SSP South Tariq Dharejo said that the slain lawyer received two bullets on his chest and his mobile phone was also missing. A case has been lodged and police are investigating from different angles.

Meanwhile, a bomb weighing two-and-a-half kilo grams was defused in Qalanadar Chowk area of North Nazimabad.

The bomb disposal squad (BDS) recovered the bomb in a bag with “Bar-e-Saghir a- Qaeda” written on it.

According to the deputy inspector general (DIG) west, at least two suspects were arrested as soon as the bomb was found. “Police and Rangers were the target of this remote-controlled device,” he added.

Police also awarded Rs 50,000 to the informant, who was a police official.
