IHC fines petitioner Rs 20,000 for wasting court’s time by 20 minutes in petition against CEC

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has dismissed a constitutional petition filed against the appointment of chief election commissioner (CEC) and imposed fine to the tune of Rs 20,000 on the petitioner for wasting precious time of the court.

A single bench of IHC comprising Justice Athar Minallah took up the case for hearing Wednesday.

The petitioner Shahid Orakzai appeared in the court and told that the registrar office has raised objection over the petition filed by him against the appointment of CEC.

The court removed the objection and allowed the time to petitioner to complete arguments.

Orakzai told the court that appointment of CEC has been challenged. Prime minister and leader of the opposition could not appoint CEC during one and half year. But three names were later proposed for this office. Legal way has not been adopted in the appointment of CEC and legal requirements have not been met.

The court enquired from him if he was an aggrieved party in the case as no other political party has objected to the appointment of CEC. “Even no objection was raised in Parliament which is representative of the entire nation. You are not aggrieved party.”

The court while slapping fine of Rs 20,000 on the petitioner for wasting precious 20 minutes of court rejected the petition.
