  • APA agrees to form special committee to mobilise support, strategy for Asian Parliament

The Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) unanimously elected Senator Mushahid Hussain as chairman of its Executive Council during a meeting in the federal capital on Monday and decided to establish a special committee to mobilise support and prepare a strategy on the fast-track for one-point agenda of establishment of an Asian Parliament.

The special committee will have its headquarters at the Senate Secretariat in Islamabad. These were amongst important decisions taken by the APA at its Executive Council meeting presided over by the Senator Hussain.

Hussain thanked the members for injecting a new life, vigour and will into the APA, adding that ever since Pakistan took over the presidency of APA, within a year, four major meetings have been held. He said Pakistan was providing leadership with ideas, issues and initiatives and the Asian Parliament.

Referring to a request from the delegate from Palestine, Hussain said, “Palestine is dear to the hearts of Pakistanis and Lahore is where support for Palestine has always emanated. In 1940, the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammed Ali Jinnah proposed a resolution for the Palestinian state on March 23, 1940, and in 1974, the Islamic Summit at Lahore accorded recognition to the PLO as the sole legitimate representative of the people of Pakistan.

As many as 19 resolutions were also approved by the Executive Council of APA. Later, the guests attended a luncheon hosted by the Leader of Opposition in the Senate Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan. They also went sightseeing in Lahore.
