29 laws covering 8 Human Rights Conventions enacted: Rashid

The National Assembly was informed Monday that the government is making all out efforts to address the issue of human rights in the country and Pakistan has ratified eight International Human Rights Conventions in this regard.

Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights Pervaiz Rashid informed the House during Question Hour that 29 laws have been enacted in the country to uphold Pakistan’s commitment under these Conventions.

Pervaiz Rashid said that under the constitution of the country all the citizens of Pakistan have equal rights without any discrimination. He said the laws to address the human rights issues exists in the country and the federal government in coordination with Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and the provincial departments is making efforts to implement these laws in their true spirit and create awareness among the masses about the Human Rights.  He said although the curriculum is a provincial matter but the Prime Minister has invited attention of the provincial governments to include human rights contents in the educational institutions.

The eight conventions which Pakistan has ratified include Convention on Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination, Convention on the Rights of Child, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, International Convention on Economic Social and Cultural Rights, International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment of Punishment and Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
