KARACHI-
As a gesture of goodwill, Pakistan released 36 Indian prisoner from District Prison Malir in Karachi on Friday.
According to media reports, the prisoners included 35 fishermen and a civilian who had completed their sentences. They will be handed over to Indian authorities through the Wagah Border in Lahore.
The fiishermen were captured by Pakistan Maritime Security Agency over illegal fishing in Pakistan’s territorial waters.
Both Pakistan and India frequently seize each other’s fishermen over violation of respective zones in the Arabian Sea, and later release them after clearance.
419 Indian fishermen are currently held in Karachi’s District Prison Malir while approximately 400 Pakistani fishermen are currently being held in Indian prisons.
Officials said each released prisoner was given shoes, cloths, edibles, other gifts besides Rs.10,000 cash from Edhi Foundation.
