The Lahore High Court (LHC) Wednesday appointed a new Technical Commission to examine the spreading of obnoxious smell by Hunza Sugar Mills and its consequent environmental effects in the area.
The court directed the commission to submit its report by December 11 and ordered that the factory would remain non-operational till then.
Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah passed the orders while hearing a petition filed by Hunza Sugar Mills against steps of Faisalabad environment deputy district officer (DDO).
On last hearing, the court de-sealed the factory and appointed Advocate Naveed Saeed Khan as local commission to inspect the matter.
During hearing on Wednesday, the said local commission and the affectees of the said mill appeared before the LHC.
After perusing the report of local commission and hearing the affectees, the court has appointed a new technical commission to examine the matter.
As per details, the residents of nearby villages of the Hunza Sugar Mills approached the Faisalabad Environment Protection Agency against the distillery plant of the said mills regarding spreading of obnoxious smell and water pollution from lagoons of distillery plant located at about 6 KM from the distillery. On the said complaints, the DDO along with inspector environment and laboratory staff of EPA visited the lagoons of distillery plant of Hunza Sugar Mills to inspect the matter where a large of number of complainants of nearby villages also gathered to lodge their protest. Upon this, the DDO sealed the said distillery plant after fulfilling the legal requirement.
The Hunza Sugar Mills challenged the act of DDO in the LHC.
