*Ayesha Serfraz says ‘imposter’ tried to snatch her valuables, car after signalling her to stop at Kalma Chowk
*Traffic wardens claim professor and her husband tortured Warden Ayub
A Punjab University teacher and her husband got involved in a clash with the traffic police on Thursday after the woman allegedly hit a warden thinking that he was a car snatcher, Pakistan Today has learnt.
According to details of the incident, Ayesha Serfraz Khan, an assistant professor of Economics at PU’s Institute of Administrative Sciences, was driving to the university at around 11.15am on Thursday when a traffic warden signalled her to stop at Kalma Chowk.
According to Ayesha, the warden had tried to snatch her car and valuables but she managed to speed away, damaging the left side of the vehicle in the process. She said that around 3.30pm she and her husband returned to the spot and enquired about the traffic warden but the other wardens forcibly took them to the Garden Town Police Station, accusing her of misbehaving with the traffic official.
“I’m sure the person who stopped me earlier in the day was a car snatcher posing as a traffic warden. The other wardens could not explain why the man had wanted to pull me out of the car and try to snatch my valuables when I had pulled over to the roadside on his signal. I had not violated the traffic signal so why was I even stopped in the first place?” she said while talking to Pakistan Today, adding that she had “just slapped” the man while struggling to escape a possible car snatching attempt.
She added that the person was nowhere in sight when she returned to the spot with her husband around 3pm.
“On our asking the other wardens about the person’s whereabouts, they forced us to go with them to the Garden Town Police Station. They even refused to disclose the man’s name,” she said, adding that the Garden Town SHO later facilitated their release from the wardens’ custody, who were adamant on registering a fake case against the couple.
On the other hand, traffic wardens of the Garden Town Sector told Pakistan Today that the couple had misbehaved with a traffic warden named Ayub. They also claimed that there were torture marks on Ayub’s body.
