Pakistan-Ireland Parliamentary Friendship Group activated in NA for interaction between Pak, Irish parliamentarians

National Assembly (NA) Acting Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi Friday stressed the need to enhance parliamentary and economic cooperation between Pakistan and Ireland besides reiterating that existing Pak-Irish relations should be reinforced through cooperation in diverse fields.

The NA acting speaker was meeting Republic of Ireland Ambassador Ken Thompson. The diplomat had called on him in the Parliament House.

Talking to the Irish diplomat, Abbasi said that that Pakistan attaches immense importance to its decade old relations with Ireland. He underlined the need for regular interactions between parliamentarians of the two countries. He said that a Pakistan-Ireland Parliamentary Friendship Group had been activated in the NA and called for interaction between the parliamentarians of the two countries on the forum to deliberate upon issues for promotion of bilateral relations.

Apprising the diplomat about the present political setup in the Pakistan, Abbasi said, “The incumbent parliament comprises enlightened and progressive forces which are working for the betterment of masses.”

He said that a multitude of problems were inherited by the present government, however, due to the “sagacious policies of the leadership, long-term and short-term policies were evolved to address the issues”.

“I am confident that the problems hampering the economic growth in the country will be addressed in the coming days,” he said while calling for both countries to actively engage in economic sectors for mutual benefit.

Speaking on the occasion, the Irish ambassador said that the present Irish leadership also desires to further augment its relations with Pakistan.

“Enhancing parliamentary relations between the two countires will make the people of Pakistan and Ireland closer,” said the diplomat.

Speaking about the ongoing cooperation between Pakistan and Ireland, Thompson praised the “vibrant Pakistani community in Ireland for their active contribution in Irish economy”.

He said that Irish companies were actively engaged in oil exploration and power generation sectors.

“Irish investors are keenly looking towards pro-investment policies in Pakistan and want to come forward and tap the potential in Pakistan,” said the Irish diplomat.
