Rs 36b collected from power consumers as Neelum-Jhelum surcharge

A sum of Rs 35,252.616 million have been collected from electricity consumers as Neelum-Jhelum surcharge since Feb 2008, said a report issued by the ministry of water and power.

According to the report, Rs 28,234.336 million Neelum-Jhelum surcharge had been collected from electricity consumers of Punjab, Rs 3,576.222 million from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Rs 2,133.355 million from Sindh and Rs 1,308.703 million Neelum-Jhelum surcharge had been collected from Baluchistan since Feb 2008.

The report said the purpose of levying Neelum-Jhelum surcharge in Feb 2008 was to meet with the requirement of local component of Neelum-Jhelum project.

The approval of surcharge was given by the Economic Coordination Committee in August 2007.

The initial PC-1 of Neelum-Jhelum was Rs 84 billion while the revised cost of the project was Rs 274 billion. The government has spent Rs 113 billion on Neelum-Jhelum project till June 30, 2014.

The government of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz has allocated Rs 30 billion for Neelum-Jhelum in the Public Sector Development Project (PSDP).
