  • AMS (Admin) Dr Waqar unleashes security guard, driver on AMS (Medical Store) Dr Sarfraz during new MS’s orientation meeting
  • Sources say Waqar, also a member of YDA, picked fight in a bid to intimidate MS Khalid Bajwa

A senior doctor of Ganga Ram Hospital was beaten up by the driver and security guard of a junior colleague right outside the medical superintendent’s office, seemingly a bid by the junior doctor to intimidate the new MS who had taken charge of the hospital on Wednesday.

Per details, freshly inducted Medical Superintendent Khalid Bajwa had called a meeting of senior doctors, including Assistant MS (Admin) Dr Waqar, AMS (Medical Store) Dr Sarfraz and Accidents and Emergency (A&E) In-charge Dr Amjad for a briefing about the hospital’s affairs.

Sources said that during the meeting, Dr Waqar kept bragging about his ‘wealth’, saying that he works merely for “fun” and not out of need.

“I own more land than the land of this hospital,” the sources quoted Dr Waqar as telling his colleagues.

“The meeting was being conducted in a light-mood when Dr Sarfraz jokingly suggested that Dr Waqar could afford to donate a CT Scan machine to the hospital’s A&E department. Although the comment was not serious, Dr Waqar started hurling abuses at the senior doctor and later called his security guard and driver who beat Dr Sarfraz in front of patients and the new MS,” said the sources.

A doctor, on the condition of anonymity, told Pakistan Today that the actual reason for Dr Waqar’s unruly behavior was to intimidate the new MS so that he would refrain from interfering in his admin affairs.

“During the meeting, MS Bajwa told the doctors to apprise him about the issues facing the hospital and also ensure that no procurement of medicine or any other hospital equipment was made without his approval and signature. Dr Waqar, who heads the admin and is also a member of the Young Doctors Association, must have been upset upon hearing the directives and we are certain that he picked a fight with Dr Sarfraz just to put fear in Dr Bajwa’s heart,” he said.

Sources in the hospital said that such practices are common in the hospital, especially when a new MS assumes office and are actually a tactic used by delinquent doctors to continue enjoying the perks of their job position unhindered.

“Some doctors engage in such malpractices in order to intimidate the new MS. Following such episodes, the MS does not interfere in the matters of such unruly doctors, allowing them a free hand to behave as they want and draw salaries without actually working.”

The tortured doctor, Sarfraz, told Pakistan Today that he was shocked at Dr Waqar’s sudden outburst over a light-hearted comment.

“I did not respond to his abuses as he’s junior to me. The entire hospital and the MS are witness to the entire episode and I trust the MS will administer justice to me,” he said.

MS Khalid Bajwa could not be contacted despite repeated attempts while Dr Waqar’s cell phone remained switched off.
