Despite the present bitterness in Indo-Pak ties, Pakistan has sent sweets to Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occassion of the Hindu festival Diwali.

Moreover, Pakistan High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit and his wife also sent Diwali sweets to Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Sources said that Abdul Basit sent the sweets to Indian PM’s Office, Indian president and the Indian external affairs minister in an initiative apparently taken totally at the High Commission level.

It is pertininet to mention here that the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir did not exchange sweets and greetings, a goodwill gesture carried out during major occasions, especially festivals like Diwali and Eid.

“In the light of present scenario with Pakistan, this time India has decided not to offer sweets to Pakistan on Diwali,” Jalandhar-based BSF IG Punjab Frontier Ashok Kumar has reportedly said.

There have been escalations in tension between Pakistan and India along the Line of Control (LoC) as well as International Border in Jammu and Kashmir recently, he said, adding that therefore, offering of sweets to Pakistani counterparts was “totally out of question”.

“This Diwali we did not exchange sweets with the Pakistani side following the heightened tension along the International Border,” a senior BSF officer said in Jammu, adding that the Indian Army did not hold any function along the LoC on the occassion of diwali this year.
