Detectives investigating 2010 murder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Dr Imran Farooq in London have released Iftikhar Hussain Qureshi, the cousin of MQM chief Altaf Hussain.
Confirming the release, the metropolitan police officials said no further action would be taken against Iftikhar Hussain who was arrested in June 2013 at Heathrow Airport while returning from Canada on suspicion of conspiracy of Imran Farooq’s murder.
Following the arrest, Iftikhar Hussain was questioned for over 36 hours by the detectives. However, the police formally released him. Farooq, 50, a founding member of the MQM, was stabbed and beaten to death in Edgware, northwest London, as he returned home from work on September 16, 2010.
Farooq claimed asylum in Britain in 1999. He had twice been elected an MP in Pakistan but left the country in 1992. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement has termed Scotland Yard decision to release Iftikhar Hussain a victory of truth, and said that a conspiracy against the movement had once again failed.
In a statement issued on late Tuesday night, the MQM felicitated its chief Altaf Hussain and Iftikhar Hussain.
However, two suspects Mohsin Ali Syed and Kashif Khan Kamran were wanted in Dr Imran Farooq murder case and Scotland Yard was in contact with Pakistani authorities for collection of evidence.
