Opposition leader in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid has said that political instability in Pakistan has hampered economic development of the country.
He was talking to an in-house discussion on the “Economic Revival of Sindh – Vision 2020” held at the Centre for Pakistan and Gulf Studies (CPGS) on Wednesday.
It was chaired by Syed Khurshid Shah along with CPGS President Senator Sehar Kamran. The in-house discussion was well attended by prominent academics, practitioners, journalists, CPGS team and university students.
The discussion revolved around economic challenges and hindrances faced by Pakistan, especially in Sindh. Senator Sehar Kamran expressed her gratitude to Shah for an in-depth and candid discussion. She said emphasis on peaceful energy programme was the need of time.
The opposition leader has said that most of the political government served its energies for protection of their governments that was why they could not implement their economic agenda. The PPP had first time in the history completed its legal term and peaceful transfer of power could possible, he said.
He said development of means of communication was the backbone of the economy of any country. Construction of the Gawader port started in 1975 but it could not be completed due to various reasons, he underlined, however development of ports could boost the economy.
The participants of the discussion commended Khurshid Shah’s valuable contribution and said that Pakistan should focus more on its agriculture as the economy of the country was an agrarian one. He said as the biggest challenge faced by Pakistan was the shortage of water, emphasis must be laid to counter the future water issues. Irrigation water must be properly chanalised.
He said Pakistan should focus on initiating hydel and water saving projects.
Khurshid Shah said the educational and agricultural programmes should be given priority on television channels and the government should make sure these channels telecast such informative programmes. Pakistan must focus on its research programme.
