  • SC lends an ear to petition seeking annulment of death sentence of 9,000 prisoners

The Supreme Court (SC) has admitted for regular hearing a petition seeking annulment of death sentence of 9,000 prisoners of various prisons and their release.

Justice Jawwad S Khawaja of SC took up for in chamber hearing of a petition filed by barrister Zafar Ullah Monday.

The counsel gave arguments against objections raised by SC registrar in respect of his petition and took the plea that enough time has elapsed ever since death sentence was awarded to death convicts and this sentence has not been implemented. During this period they have served enough prison term. Now they stand entitled to release. Therefore, they be set free and their death sentence be quashed, he pleaded.

The petitioner further told the court the objections raised by registrar SC are of ordinary nature due to which course of dispensation of justice cannot be blocked. He prayed the court to set aside registrar objections and admit the petition for hearing.

The petition is likely to be heard today.
