Former military dictator Pervez Musharraf Tuesday said he is willing to disregard his personal differences with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and extend complete support to him if the latter starts working for the progress of Pakistan and carries out the much needed reforms in the country.

In an interview to a private news channel, Musharraf said it was time for Pakistanis to look beyond personalities like Nawaz Sharif, Tahirul Qadri and Imran Khan and instead focus their attention on safeguarding Pakistan’s interests.

“I am not a supporter of Tahirul Qadri or Imran Khan but I do agree with their calls for political and electoral reforms,” he said, adding that everyone knows that the 2013 elections were rigged.

The former president said those denying calls for change are in fact being hypocritical.

“Constitutional amendments are needed to bring about change in the country for socio-economic development and to reform our electoral system. One option is to get it done through the military but I don’t endorse any military intervention. The other option is to form a national consensus government which is empowered by the civil and military establishment and the judiciary to carry out the constitutional amendments for changing the system, or formation of a government based on the Bangladesh model,” he said.

Musharraf said it was time for the government to seriously think about change as the slogan of ‘Go Nawaz Go’ was now finding support in the Sharifs’ bastion in Punjab.
