*PAT chief instead asks his followers to mark social media posts with ‘Go Nawaz Go’ slogans
Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Chairman Dr Tahirul Qadri Monday withdrew his party’s campaign of writing “Go Nawaz Go” on currency notes, saying that after conducting research, he has come to know that writing on currency notes is “illegal”.
Qadri, however, has now announced to launch “Go Nawaz Go” campaign on mobile phone’s short message services (SMS) and social media sites.
The PAT chief’s decision to withdraw the note-scribbling campaign follows warnings by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Ashraf Mahmood Wathra that scribbling political slogans on currency notes is illegal and punishable under the law.
Addressing participants of PAT’s sit-in in Islamabad, Qadri directed PAT supporters to write “Go Nawaz Go” at the end of each mobile phone text message and post on social media sites instead of scribbling the slogan on currency notes.
On Sunday, Qadri had told his followers to start of a campaign of writing “Go Nawaz Go” on currency notes and also announced the start of a hunger camp.
After the note-scribbling kicked off, the SBP had issued a warning in the interest of the general public and banks that any note bearing written, stamped, embossed or inscribed any slogan/statement or messages of political, religious or commercial nature ceases to be legal tender and loses its exchange value.
“Any such act will result in financial loss to the holder of such notes,” said a SBP statement.
The bank reminded the public that banknotes are critical for the country’s sovereignty and “it is our responsibility to handle and use the same with due care”.
Moreover, the defacement of banknotes is also punishable by law.
