Girl suffers injuries as her cell phone battery explodes

A teenage girl suffered burns injuries Friday as her cell phone battery reportedly exploded in Manzoor Colony, and she was shifted to the Burns Center, Civil Hospital, Karachi.

A 19-year-old girl, resident of Manzoor Colony, Jamsheed Town, talking to PPI claimed that she was listing FM radio on Thursday at 9am when suddenly the battery of her cell phone exploded.

She received burn injuries on upper parts of her body but, luckily, her face remained safe. She said some fault had developed in her cell phone battery few days ago but she kept on using it due to urgent need. She was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) and later she was referred to Burns Center, Civil Hospital Karachi, where her condition was said to be stable.

Senior Plastic Surgeon and In-charge of Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) Burns Center Dr Ehmer-Al-Ibran, when contacted, said this rare kind of case was reported for the first time in seven-year history of the Burns Center. He stressed the need of taking precautionary measures for preventing such incidents in future. He said such cases occurred generally due to low-battery, faulty battery, using cell during charging, putting cell batteries in fire and using the cell near petrol pumps. He said generally some people put their cell phones beneath their pillow during sleep which was harmful for their health.
