Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday thanked the members of National Assembly for their support to protect democracy, a private news channel reported.
PM Sharif, addressing the NA, said that the assembly is a representative of 200 million people of Pakistan and the display of strength by the MNAs in support for democracy will always be remembered.
“I find it heartening when politicians say that they are fighting for democracy and not for a prime minister,” he said.
“Nine out of 10 political parties in the assembly supported democratic process which is never witnessed in the history of Pakistan,” he added.
He thanked the political parties, journalists, traders, minorities and all sections of society that supported constitution and democracy in the country.
“I have taken oath to protect the Constitution. I will not disappoint you”.
“I assure you that this journey of prosperity and rule of law will continue unabated.” he said.
He said Pakistani rupee weakened as a result of prevailing political impasse, adding that the stock markets also suffered because of political turmoil.
The premier expressed the confidence that the journey for strengthening democracy and ensuring supremacy of the parliament will continue, adding that the government will ensure speedy progress on the development projects for the welfare of the people.
