Reportedly angered over Pakistan’s High Commissioner to New Delhi Abdul Basit’s meeting with pro-freedom Kashmiri groups in New Delhi, India Monday called off foreign secretary-level talks with Pakistan which were scheduled for next week, while Pakistan has termed the decision as a “setback” to the efforts made by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to promote good neighbourly relations with India.

According to the schedule, Indian External Affairs Secretary Sujatha Singh was to arrive in the capital on August 25 to hold talks with her Pakistani counterpart Aizaz Chaudhry, nearly two years after the India-Pakistan talks were stalled due to incidents along the Line of Control.

The Indian media alleged that the Pakistan HC’s meeting had taken place despite being firmly conveyed by Sujatha that Pakistan had to choose between India and Kashmiri freedom fighters for talks.

“Therefore, under the present circumstances, no useful purpose will be served by the Indian foreign secretary going to Islamabad next week,” the Indian media quoted the spokesperson of the Indian External Affairs Ministry Syed Akbaruddin as saying.

“It was underlined that the Pakistani HC’s meetings with these so called leaders of the Hurriyat undermines the constructive diplomatic engagement initiated by Prime Minister Modi in May on his very first day in office,” Akbaruddin said.

HC MEETS HURRIYAT LEADER:

Earlier, prominent Hurriyat leader Shabir Ahmad Shah called on Pakistan’s High Commissioner to New Delhi Abdul Basit, who has also invited other Hurriyat leaders including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mohammad Yasin Malik for consultations in Delhi today (Tuesday).

The meeting had evoked sharp reaction from political quarters in India with the Congress hitting out at the ruling party for allowing the envoy to meet Hurriyat leaders. This criticism was in contrast to Congress party’s traditions of not banning such meetings in past as Pakistani envoys had in the past too talked to Hurriyat leaders from Kashmir before any major diplomatic initiative with India.

However, Islamabad had broken off from this tradition when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif recently visited India to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

FO DEFENDS:

Defending the HC’s meeting with Kashmiri Hurriyat leaders, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said that it was a longstanding practice that prior to Pakistan-India talks, meetings with Kashmiri leaders were held to facilitate a meaningful discussions on the issue of Kashmir.

In an official statement, the spokeswoman said that the prime minister of Pakistan had clearly articulated the vision of peace for development.

“It was in this spirit that he accepted the invitation of the Indian Prime Minister to attend his inaugural ceremony. The meeting between the two foreign secretaries was scheduled at the directive of the two prime ministers.”

  1. The current leaders on both sides had acted differently and Pakistan must appreciate it. Simply repeating the stale rants of "usual practice" isn't going to help. Why did Nawaz Sharif not meet these thugs during his India visit, had it been brushed aside as 'usual'. Usual rants can't hold grounds in unusual environment. This is a lack of maturity on the Pakistan side. It once again shows, "Who is or isn't in command in Pakistan"? Pakistan must decide that who is in command and who is a competent authority in Pakistan who can be trusted for credible talks?

  2. Pak response to meet the separatists must be their problem, nothing to do with Indians. It must be fully realized. Boith Modi and Nawaz Sharif had acted out of the norms and this must have been borne in mind unless it indicates that elected govt in Pakistan has nothing to do with her credible authority over their military commanders. Then no matter, what Nawaz Sharif talks, it's fruitless. Hence the calling off of the FS level talks are equally justified. There is no point in talking with sham authority.

    • Even world know who have authority in Pakistan…. Even Nawaz wanted to have resolved Kashmire issue. First you deny Kashmire existence then on the base of false proposition you say it is atoot ang…. I simply suggest you what Ghandhi wanted to say about Kashmire before he was shot down!

      • I fully agree with you that whole world knows, who have authority in Pakistan, except Pakistanis. You are taught in your Islamist madarsas manufactured lies on everything because the Holy sanctions to lie – "Taqiyya" when needed. Hence your screeches are nothing new. You people in Pakistan are best impostors and fool themselves every now and again. Your problem lies in your military which determines even your breakfast. If you want to live in self denials and false ideas of victimhood, choice is yours. Remember, the world lie only at the distance of a click. You may run but you can't hide. Fact is that Jinnah secretively invaded Kashmir that was accessed to India by Maharaja Hari Singh in collusion with the British military commander and couldn't grab it entirely because Maharaja had already signed the Instrument of Accession to India like other 565 Indian States. Please stop fooling yourself. Nobody shall buy your crap. Keep going and I certainly love your lies.

  3. There is no second thought, it was, it is, & it will always be Kashmir. One life of a Kshmiri is a lot & many of our lives for Kashmir are nothing. India is giving us a good option. We are going to chose what we have to. Qudus.

  4. Lately Pakistan has been talking about kashmere as a free nation. Then why not it frees the part of kashmere it occupies and make it a free nation?

  5. No matter what the proponent of Akhand Bharat say, if there is one right soul on this Earth left, then the birth right of any human being can not be denied. If India is correct about her stance, then why Kashmiris can not decide their own fate under an impartial international authority? India is afraid if that happens, then Kashmir will chose independence. That will be the begining of the end of India. The India as we see today was never a country since the begining of human history. I challenge any Indian historian to produce any authentic map of India from the past which can confirm its current day political boundaries.

    • If Pakistan is so interested in Kashmiri's "deciding their own fate" – why hasn't Pakistan decided to hand over its occupied Kashmir and Gilgit and Baltistan to India for a plebiscite ??

Also, with nearly 40-45% of the Kashmiri Population being driven out by Islamic radicals what "plebiscite" can be there ?? There are more than just "muslims" in Kashmir – something Pakistani's don't understand and can't accept. Also, Kashmir as a country was part of the Sikh empire before it was taken by the British and Sikhs joined India during the 1947 separation and division of British India.

Finally, the BJP won EVERY SINGLE seat in Jammu and Ladhak – making both these regions against a J&K state and against so-called "Kashmiri nationalism" that is only practiced by Muslims and some mullahs.

    • WAS Pakistan a country since the beginning of human history ? India was a nation BEFORE your maps came into existence,India had a culture and civilization when the forefathers of present day "historians"did not know how to climb down from the trees in which they were living and Indian literature & philosophy were created when your experts were using sign language for communication. The experts has not still understood the full import of what was written at that time and are still going in circles to decipher the import of those writing. As for the geographical boundary, you shout a JAI from Himalayas you will get a SRIRAM response from Kanyakumari deep south. That is INDIA.

  6. In the period from 2003 to 2012 it is estimated that 8000 people were kidnapped by Pakistani security forces in the province(economist-7th april 2012) In 2008 alone an estimated 1102 Baloch people disappeared. There have also been reports of torture(human rights watch) An increasing number of bodies "with burn marks, broken limbs, nails pulled out, and sometimes with holes drilled in their heads" are being found on roadsides because of a "kill and dump" campaign conducted by Pakistani security forces especially by the ISI and the Frontier Corps .(economist) In July 2011, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan issued a report on illegal disappearances in Balochistan and identified ISI and Frontier Corps as the perpetrators. The Pakistan Rangers are also alleged to have committed a vast part of the human rights violations in the region. Islamist parties such as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Jamaat-e-Islami, have also systematically targeted Shia Muslims in Balochistan, with about 600 being killed in attacks in recent years.Look into the gross human right violation perpetrated, aided ,abetted by the Pak govt.First stop human rights violations in your own country and then talk about human rights in other countries
