LAHORE-

Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday was told by the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) that Prime Minister will not resign from his post amid the political pressure as he is a democratically elected premier, a private news channel reported.

According to the report, during the hearing of a petition against Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan’s Azadi march, a three-member bench of LHC- comprising of Justice Khalid Mehmood Khan, Justice Shahid Hameed and Justice Anwarul Haq- had asked the AGP Salman Butt to consult PM Nawaz Sharif about his suggestions on the Azadi March.

The AG, in a written reply to the court, said that the PM is willing to meet the PTI chief if the Azadi March is called off while adding the the premier will not be submitting to the political pressure to resign.

PTI’s counsel Ahmed Owais was also directed by the bench to ask Imran Khan about his demands so that the issue could be resolved.

Owais told the court that he will contact Khan and will inform the court later.

The PTI counsel was asked by the bench if he would recommend Khan to meet with PM Sharif as per the court’s earlier directives. The counsel replied that at this stage, the talks seemed out of the questioned.

The bench further inquired of the counsel that if the PTI chief believed the May 2013 general elections wee rigged, why had he taken an oath in the National Assembly.

The counsel replied that for the past 14 months, PTI had been putting forward its demands but it has all been in vain.

The bench granted the respondents time till August 13 to submit their replies before 12 AM.

On Monday, Imran Khan, Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri, PML-Q leaders Chaudhry Shujaat Husain and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, Awami Muslim League’s Sheikh Rasheed were sent notices by LHC to explain their position on Azadi March on a petition filed by citizen Muhammad Kamran stating the the march announced by PTI and PAT would promote anarchy in the country.
