Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain appealed to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah to declare emergency in Karachi, Hyderabad and other urban areas of Sindh prior to possible monsoon rains.

“The funds should be released so that people could be provided with basic necessities like healthcare, sewerage services, safe drinking water, and other facilities during the rainy season,” he said in a statement issued from London Secretariat.

Hussain said that the Met Office had forecast cloudbursts and extreme monsoon called for extreme measures.

“Rain nullahs should be cleaned before the start of monsoon and the sewerage system should also be refurbished to drain the rain water during the season,” he said.

The MQM leader further said that it was ironic that there was no local government system in place to manage Karachi, which is a metropolis of 20 million. He expressed deep concern over possible disastrous rain which might cause chaos in Karachi and other urban areas of Sindh.
