While the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan is set to hold its anti-rigging demonstration at Islamabad’s D-Chowk on August 14, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is also considering holding an Independence Day rally at the same venue, the government’s Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid has said.
In an interview to a local newspaper, Rashid said that D-Chowk used to be the traditional venue for the biggest function to commemorate August 14 which is why the government had decided to organise a rally there.
“The tradition of holding the Independence Day function at D-Chowk began before the PTI even existed. It has nothing to do with the PTI,” the minister said.
As part of its strategy to avert a showdown with Khan’s party, the government may opt to reserve the D-Chowk venue for its Independence Day rally and advise PTI to hold their protest elsewhere in the federal capital.
