Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman Dr Ansar Pervez has said that there was no threat to under-construction nuclear power plants in Karachi from Tsunami or earthquake adding that a mechanism was in place for controlling radiation in case of any accident.
As the National Assembly Standing Committee on Planning, Development and Reform met on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Abdul Majeed Khan, the PAEC chairman briefed the committee about the Chashma Nuclear Power Projects (Units 3 &4) (C-3/C-4), current status of Nuclear power at Chashma, its performance, unit cost of electricity project financing and PC-1 unit cost break-up.
The PAEC chief said that the cost of electricity generated from these power plants would be Rs 6.75 and is the cheapest from the rest of the sources. He said after refuelling of the Chashma Power Plant C-1 is producing electricity with its full capacity.
The PAEC chairman said that they will perform the duty of spending money on construction of C4 in 13 years and will expand the work further after the final safety report of C4. He told that C4 system would be connected to national system in 2016 and supply of electricity will be started.
Dr Ansar said that the material which was used in plant was imported from China however some material was self made. He said two new under construction nuclear plants were in last phases for producing 1,100 mega watts of electricity. He assured that nuclear power houses had no danger from tsunami and earthquake. He added that they did not obtain any subsidy from government for KANUPP power house.
The FESCO chief executive briefed the meeting about grid stations of seven districts. He told that there was only one workshop under FESCO in which all the transformers of seven districts were repaired.
The IESCO chief executive briefed the meeting regarding the newly-built grid stations and installation of new transformers into these stations and told that they are under grounding the cables where cables have been affected due to Metro bus project because due to Metro bus load shedding has been extended and it has become difficult to work.
