Pakistan military helicopters shelled militant hideouts in the country’s restive northwest on Wednesday as part of a massive ongoing offensive against the Taliban and other extremists, killing 10 insurgents, officials said.

The helicopters pounded militant compounds in the Khar Warsak area, 12 kilometres (seven miles) north of Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal region.

“The helicopters destroyed three militant compounds and killed 10 insurgents during the shelling,” a local security official told a foreign news agency.

A local intelligence official confirmed the attack and militant casualties.

  1. Our nations have made a lot of sacrifices in fighting terrorism, and continue to do so in our shared quest for peace. It is our wish and desire to see peace prevail throughout the region, especially Pakistan. It was widely reported that today that PM Nawaz Sharif said: "Full fledged offensive has now started and all foreign fighters and local terrorists will be wiped out without exception and no sanctuary will be spared by the Pakistan Armed Forces." We echo what Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said: "The Pakistan military and the government understand the threat, and they continue to go after that threat." We commend the brave security forces of Pakistan in their ongoing efforts to counter the threat of terrorism. We also send our heartfelt condolences to the families of all those brave soldiers who have lost their lives in the ongoing Operation Zarb-e-Azb.
