Polio case surfaces in Karachi, national figure reaches 84

KARACHI-

A new polio case surfaced in Karachi on Fridau, bringing the total number of cases in Pakistan to 84 in year 2014.

According to details, an 22-month-old child, identified as Murad, was tested positive for polio virus. The child is a resident of Landhi.

Until now, 65 cases have been reported from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), 12 from Khyber-Paktunkhwa (K-P) and, with the latest case, seven from Sindh.

Pakistan is one of only three countries in the world where polio is still endemic but efforts to stamp out the crippling disease have been hit by repeated attacks on health teams.

The other two countries are Nigeria and Afghanistan.
